It is the fifth-largest city in Madhya Pradesh and a significant Hindu pilgrimage centre, famous for the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple. The city has a rich history, dating back to the time of the ancient Mahājanapadas, and has been an important trade and political centre of the Indian subcontinent.
